Calzolari Biography
Pier Paolo Calzolari’s (Bologna, 1943) research is based on a personal combination of painting, performance and material installations, which he himself defines as a practice of “activation of space”. Influenced at a young age by the climate, the atmospheric agents and the “materials” of Venice (salt, marble, water, fog and light), over the decades he has created a large cycle of works with freezing structures and neon, fire, lead, tin, salt, moss, tobacco. Since the 1960s he has based his poetics on color and the pictorial vision (from Valori Plastici to Morandi and Casorati), related to the physical involvement of spectators, as in the famous performance-works Il Filtro e Benvenuto all’Angelo (1966-1967) or Usura amore e misericordia (1972-1974). Despite the proximity to the contemporary production of the artists of Arte Povera, Conceptual Art and Post Minimalism, Calzolari’s art is based on the passage of time,
on the fragility of life and on alchemical processes.
